Stop Being Mean to Yourself: A Story about Finding
the True Meaning of Self Love
Hazelden, 1998 (paperback)

Melody journeyed to Algeria, Morocco, and Egypt to write this true story. In the setting of an interrogation by authorities in Tel Aviv, Melody tells her interrogators what she discovered – that art is borne from pain, that people anywhere can be held captive, and the ultimate lesson is learning compassion for ourselves.
“I was making the transition from self-help author to storyteller,” Melody says. “While all books tell a story in some shape or form, I was working diligently toward leaving didactic text behind and becoming a pure storyteller.
“I was also interested in the Islamic religion and the issue of terrorism and wanted to start telling people a story about that within the context of my self-help writing contract at that time.”
