Playing it by Heart
Hazelden, 1999

This book is Beattie’s autobiography.
“A little something for everyone” is how Beattie describes Playing it by Heart. It takes an intimate look at many of the issues she’s faced. One chapter addresses the death of her son. Another chapter tells the heart-warming story of her move from struggling author on welfare to successful bestselling author. In one chapter she tells the story of her codependency.
The book’s strongest and longest chapter, Jump, takes an in-depth look at her years as a heroin/cocaine addict.
This chapter alone is a must-read for anyone dealing with addiction issues, or anyone who wants to better understand someone else’s addiction.
“I wanted to end the myth that I was a neat and proper little alcoholic or prescription drug addict,” Beattie says. “I was a down and out junkie and drug store robber. My main purpose in telling this story was to let others know that if I could find the miracle of sobriety, anyone could.”
